WATER BROTHER is a feature documentary following East Coast legend Sid Abbruzzi
as he faces the imminent closure of his iconic surf and skate shop in Newport, Rhode Island.
Reflecting on his lifetime dedicated to core culture, the film captures Sid's passion and commitment to
preserving the history. Featuring archival footage, elegant cinematography and personal interviews with
culture giants like Tony Hawk, Shepard Fairey, Selema Masekela and more, this film takes viewers
on a journey through the evolution of surfing and skating.
As Sid turned 73, WATER BROTHER highlights the impact of the shop's demolition
on the community and serves as a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit of surf culture.

NEXT BLOG September 29th, 2024.
All future Blogs will be posted on the 1st and 3rd week of every month (give or take a day). *Also in the event of any significant swell I will post the week of that swell. Although the blog is now bi-weekly, I'm certainly not gonna pass up a decent swell. So while it's basically going to be every other week, I left it open for some wiggle room.

32nd SURF FAMILY ROBINSON. WATER BROTHER MOVIE.
NEW NON-TROPICAL SWELL. GWOT 9-11 OBSERVANCE.
KOLOHE ANDINO VISITS NH AT SUMMER SESSIONS.

It’s been 32 years since I first started this surf family/friends gathering on this beach. For 25 consecutive years I ran this annual Labor Day weekend Beach party for surfers with kids. I took some time off when my kids got older and had Duffy McCarthy step in and help keep it together. Now with 5 grandkids and Duffy's kids getting older, I came back this year and picked right up where I left off. We had a pretty good crowd with some new faces and a few older ones too. Hell, we even had the Evans family show up. See Rick and Karen at SURF FAMILY ROBINSON brought back so many fond memories of the days of old when all the surfers and their families showed up.

Nowadays it's a whole new group of surfers with their families.

But I'm happy to report that the magic and excitement of SURF FAMILY ROBINSON lives on. We still have all day surfing and boogie boarding. Crab races and human crab races. The Silver Dollar treasure hunt. And the main feature is the Return of Pirate Jonas, followed by the BIG HUGE TREASURE hunt. If you are a surfer with kids you really should come to one of these gatherings. Your kids will love it. Trust me. They will love it.
Check the photo gallery of this year's SURF FAMILY ROBINSON.

"WATER BROTHER" The Sid Abruzzi story comes to Portsmouth, NH.
And man what a great turnout this was. Surfers from all over Northern New England came out to see the documentary on a true surf legend Sid Abruzzi. Every single person I spoke with loved this film. They all thought it was inspirational and just a great all around story about a man who most New England surfers have heard of.

Wil Kinnane, Colin Moniz, and Sid Abruzzi before the show.

The Kinnane brothers and Colin did an amazing job telling Sid's story. The many characters that were in the film helped propel this story onto the big screen along with a killer soundtrack. It was great seeing all the local surf shop owners come out and support the movie. From Dave Cropper of Cinnamon Rainbows, Steve O'Hara from Pioneers, Mike "Zappy" Paugh from Zapstix, and the McGill brothers from Summer sessions. Sid himself was impressed with the turnout. I did my part in helping promote the film by pushing it here on the Blog and on social media. After all, I've known Sid since the early 70's. We're the same age, and oh yeah, we're both Italian. And as any Italian American will tell you, that's an automatic connection. That goes deeper than a few tomato plants.

And somewhere in his home he has the old VHS video of he and I jamming with world champ Tommy Curren and Gail Greenwood (the woman bass player) from BELLY. I believe that was in 94. Anyway, it was a great night for Sid and his wife Danielle, along with Wil and Colin. The local SUMMER SESSION shop located at the bottom of the street of the Music Hall was a great hangout prior to the show. Big Thanks to Ryan and Tyler McGill for hosting the pre show hang.

All the local legends made a good showing too.

Kevin "Doc" Grondin, Lenny Nichols, Bob McNeil, Mike Rosa (and Sky), and the Big Dog himself Steve SURFER CROW Watson. And of course all the other surfers and their wives and girl friends. It was a great night.

I'm sure Sid won't forget the warm reception he got here in Portsmouth.
Check out the photo gallery of the entire night down in the photo section.
Meanwhile watch the Trailer at the top pf this page to WATER BROTHER.
And if you live in or near Portland, Maine stop in and see the film on Tuesday September 17th, 2024 at 7:00PM. You'll be stoked that you did.

"SURFING and SKATEBOARDING HEALS ALL WOUNDS"

Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys. He was a close and dear friend of mine.

When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers. Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

ED'S CORNER September 15th, 2024

The date was February 9th, 2013. The place was the Rocks. This was after a massive Nor'easter that dumped a ton of snow on our community. My son Maxi paddled out there alone and Ed was there to capture the action. Max only caught a few waves, but it was a memorable session to say the least.

Max even spoke about tis day when we had the Paddle for Ed. I remember calling Ed later this day to thank him for capturing this day. Especially seeing how Ed was also keeping an eye out for Max. Photo by Ed O'Connell

For 23 consecutive years a handful of NH surfers all meet at the spot where we were surfing when 9-11 changed the world. For many years it was the same group. Then over the years some have lost interest in meeting there, and others just faded away.

There's usually four of us who meet here.

Myself, Johnny Meehan, Tony Berardini, and Markey J Jowett. Markey just plain forgot this year, otherwise he would have been there. Truth be told, he was really upset that he missed it. See, we never speak of it. We all just show up at around 8:30AM and wait until 8:46AM when we have a moment of silence.

Then we wait until 9:03AM the moment the world knew that the United States was at war. Terence Kirby just so happened to be driving by when he saw me standing there. He wanted to know what I was doing. When I told him why, he was completely surprised and a little embarrassed not knowing it was 9-11.

After I explained to him why I was there, he was genuinely touched by it and asked if he could stay. I of course said yes. So this was the 2024 version of this special observance.

There's a reason why surfers remember this day.

The surf on September 11th, 2001 was amazing. Hurricane Erin was sitting off the coast and pulsing perfect surf that day. Bob Hayes from Amesbury, MA was a local surfer. He was on Flt 11 out of Logan that morning. Bob was the very first person to ever buy one of my local surf movies. 99 to 90 was all the surf we had from 1999 to 1990. I had it out on VHS videotapes. When he called to buy one I remember saying to him "Bob you're not in this movie." His reply was "I don't care, my friends are in it and these are the places I surf all the time time." I laughed and sent him the tapes.

I was with Bob shortly before 9-11. I was at the end of my surfing everyday in memory of my dad. He had his two sons with him at the Wall and we just sat under the Wall talking about surfing. More specifically talking about surfing with his sons. I told him how amazing it was going to be for him to be able to surf with his kids. Unfortunately Bob would never get to experience that.

So a bunch of us knew Bob and when we found out he was on that first plane it really hit home. Also on-board that ill-fated flight was Tommy Pecorelli. The brother of then local surfer Angela Veltsos. Uncle of Jared Veltsos and Melanie Veltsos.

That's two connections to our seacoast community.

So each year we honor those two the loving memory of Bob Hayes and Tommy Pecorelli. And the thousands more who died that day, and the even more thousands of brave men and women who have died since that day, fighting in the Global War On Terrorism. May they all Rest In Peace

There are 82 names on our monument in front of our Veteran's post. I was Commander of Post 35 for 13 years. From 2001-2014. In 2006 I spearheaded the FIRST IN THE NATION GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM Monument. Where we have the names of all the NH veterans who have made the supreme sacrifices for our country since September 11th, 2001. Each year we add any new service members who have died in the GWOT. It's one of the things I have been involved with that I am most proud of being a member of The AMERICAN LEGION Post 35 here in the Hamptons.

The HIT THE BEACH Day and the GWOT Observance.

In 2026 it will be 25 years since 9-11, and it will be our Post's 20th Anniversary of erected and dedicating our monument. I am hoping, that whoever our Commander of Post 35 is in 2026, that they would let me say a few words about the monument on the 20th anniversary. I would be honored to speak about the men and women who worked with me, to make this historic monument become a staple of our seacoast community.

This is me and our guest speaker Col. Charles Nicols USMC. Col. Nicols is 6'7" tall and believe it or not he was in TANKS when he was in IRAQ. He was a great speaker. And the ceremony that night was beautiful. There is a gallery of photos that I shot down in the gallery section. There's also a video coming too.

The first in the nation GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM monument is right here in Hampton, NH.

TWO DAYS Of a NON-TROPICAL SWELL.
September 7th and 8th, 2024.

I have to admit, every time Dougie Fresh comes home he brings a swell with him. Oh and he also scored this wave of the day.

Kody Grondin was at the north side of this break picking off these wide lefts that were sliding through the line-up.

So our hurricane season is anything but what they said it was going to be. This swell was almost better than ERNESTO. A no name low pressure system that gave us two solid days of head high and better (on the sets) was better than nothing. Matt Colby rocketing off the lip at the Cove.

And this just might be the biggest wave I have ever shot of Erica Nardone.

Kyle Linseman paddled out and proceeded to get a quick dozen or more waves on just his knowledge alone. He pretty much knows this spot like the back of his hand.

And Kyle's girlfriend Alexa picked off this nice looking right when nobody was looking right.

FRIDAY THE 13th SUMMER SESSIONS SURF SESH & SURF MOVIE
I was impressed with the turnout for the Friday the 13th Surf/sesh/contest for the local groms at SUMMER SESSIONS this last Friday night. Ryan and Tyler McGill have helped me out each summer with the HIT THE BEACH Day and just recently helped out with Sid Abruzzi's movie in Portsmouth. So I returned the favor by helping them promote this night. Kolohe Andino is one of the best surfers in the world. And in the short film HIJINX it's pretty evident why he is just that. The man can surf. And so couldn't his dad back in the day.

The 2 Percent Crew came to town to a barely ridable surf scene but like any stoked surfers, they made the best of it. Ryan and Tyler McGill are like two adult Groms. Those two have more fun in and out of the water than almost anybody else that I know. They project a solid positive energy and the kids up there in Rye and beyond love them.

I was quietly grinning at the scene out in the water with Andino and his crew. They made the small waves look like so much fun that I don't think anybody cared at just how small it was. And I told Ryan I had never seen the cool "Piano Keys" bit. That's where they line up the soft-tops and run across the boards without falling in the water. I loved it.

It was classic. Check this kid out.

The Feid family enjoying the whole vibe of the night.

THE DEBATE TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 10th, 2024
The debate started off when Kamala Harris confidently walked over to shake the hand of her opponent. For the next 90 minutes she completely dismantled the former president. She handled him like the spoiled little brat that he is. She schooled him. She exposed him for what he really is. A total and complete bully. The master of nonsense. More importantly? She made him look like the thing he hates most in this world. A loser. Every single poll had her winning. Every poll except NEWSMAX. Every other "legit poll" had her as the winner. There was no question she won. Even members of the GOP admitted the Orange King got spanked by an African/Indian/American woman. Ouch.

Whenever he started on about the Haitians eating dogs and cats in Springfield? It was over. He was completely and soundly defeated. And I am not much of a betting man but, most pundits have her winning in November. I believe she is going to win by a large margin in November. In fact, to use an old Furniture ad line when running a Liquidation sale..."STICK A FORK IN HIM. HE'S ALL DONE." Besides, he's too old. He's DonOLD.

The book that I have been writing the last 100 years or so. The book will be out long after I hit my 20th Year Anniversary of this Blog. And that will be double the reason to celebrate. BOOK and BLOG. And YES, there will be a book signing. And I will let you all know in advance, where and when. The book will be available in both hard cover and soft cover on AMAZON, BARNES & NOBLE, INGRAM, GOOGLE BOOKS, and KOBO PUBLISHING.

Most of my close friends have heard some of these stories first hand. But trust me, with over 100 stories, there's a handful that none of you have ever heard. It's true. Be patient my friends. It's all coming in November of 2024.

SID IS GOING TO BE THERE IN PERSON.
Don't miss it.

I'm not gonna lie when James Earl James passed away I could not pass up this opportunity to use our boy in this week's KSM spoof. Poor Sheiky, he can't win with me. Why do I have to be so hurtful to Khaliddy? Oh you know. Fodder for his weekly column in the GITMO GAZETTE. "WHO'S MY DADDY?"

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed). *Note to self -must pick up a DARTH VADER HALLOWEEN COSTUME at Home Depot this week.

PLEASE KEEP Karen Evans
in your thoughts and prayers. Karen and her immediate family at the beach. Karen is currently battling FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia) a result of damage to neurons in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. She's doing remarkably well in dealing with this condition. The Evans have been local icons here for as long as I can remember. All the Surf Families are in full support of Rick, Karen, Matt, Megan and Nick and baby Luka, and of course Mikel. Sending your positive thoughts and prayers to Karen and the family are welcome.

I remember this day like it was yesterday. My dad would be gone in 3 years. It was his last day at the beach. But he got to see his grandsons and granddaughters surf this day. It is a memory that I shall cherish forever. Happy 33rd Birthday Mackey V.

I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.

I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.

Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup and go through the journal. Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that. Be forewarned it will change you forever.
